It's all a matter of timing...

Hello everyone! It's been a while. Thankfully Christopher has seen fit to grant me access to this blog so I can post random rants...I'm sure he'll regret it in short order. I may pop in from time to time and share thoughts on film, music, and anything else that may be worth discussing.

First up is a real bargain from Amazon: A 2-pack of soundtracks to Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love and 2046. I waited on purchasing these discs for some time, and I'm glad I did. These appear to be the French soundtrack releases, bundled together at an amazingly low price.

The imagery of Wong Kar-Wai's films is inexorably linked to music. Both of these superb compilations transport the listener back to the intoxicating world of 1960s Hong Kong (and, in the case of 2046, the far future). They're very complete, containing both score material and source music, such as the unforgettable Nat King Cole tunes, and even a dash of Chinese opera. Michael Galasso's work on In the Mood for Love and Shigeru Umebayashi's contributions to 2046 are very cohesive; the string arrangements here are hauntingly beautiful. Unlike the protagonists in Kar-Wai's work, these were meant to be together. This is a no brainer. If you haven't seen these films, be sure to check them out.

I've been on a Kar-Wai fix lately, so I may have more thoughts to share on this groundbreaking director in the future.
